Which artificial plant height fits your room?.

In short

The most common question in our inbox is not about colour or species but about size. "I have an empty corner beside the sofa, which height do I need?" The answer depends on three things: your ceiling, the spot and the pot. Here is how to work it out in five minutes, with the sizes we carry alongside.

The wrong size is the main reason a plant "does not look right". Too small and it disappears against the wall. Too large and the room feels full. Measuring therefore saves a return.

Measure your ceiling first, not your plant

Start with the ceiling height. In a post-war home you are usually at 240 to 260 centimetres. In a 1930s house you get to 280 or 320, and in a new-build flat 260 is common.

Take a tape measure and measure from floor to ceiling at the spot where the plant will stand. Watch out for sloping walls and for a lowered ceiling above a dining area, where you are easily twenty centimetres lower than in the rest of the room.

The rule of thumb: two thirds of the wall

A plant looks most settled when it takes up around two thirds of the wall height. With a 240 centimetre ceiling that puts you around 160 centimetres, at 260 around 175, and at 300 around 200.

Above those two thirds it starts to crowd. The upper branches come close to the ceiling and that reads as too full, certainly in a narrow room. Stay well below it and the corner lacks height and the wall stays bare.

Two exceptions. Behind a sofa you can go lower, because the backrest eats up the bottom forty centimetres. And in a hallway or stairwell you can go higher, because you walk past it and the plant is mainly seen at eye level.

What the decorative pot adds

Almost everyone forgets this. The heights you see with us are the heights of the plant itself, including the grow pot it stands in. Put it in a decorative pot and height is added: reckon on ten to twenty-five centimetres, depending on whether the plant sinks into the pot or rests on top.

To get it exactly right, measure the internal depth of your decorative pot and subtract that from the pot height. How to set an artificial plant firmly and neatly into a decorative pot we have described step by step in repotting artificial plants.

By spot: corner, sofa, hallway and office

  • Empty corner in the living room. This is the place for your largest plant. With a standard ceiling, 180 works best; with high ceilings, 200.
  • Beside or behind the sofa. Measure from the backrest. 150 to 160 centimetres usually looks best here.
  • Hallway, corridor or landing. Narrow and tall works better here than wide. Think 140 to 160 centimetres, with a plant that does not spread far.
  • On a sideboard or cabinet. Add the height of the furniture. A plant of 40 to 60 centimetres is often enough here.
  • Meeting room or reception. Here go one size larger than you think. In a space with plenty of traffic and furniture, a small plant disappears. More on that in our article about setting up your workspace.

The sizes we carry

Our collection runs from 40 to 200 centimetres. This is how those sizes relate to a space:

Height Where it fits Example from our collection
40 to 60 cm Sideboard, bookcase, windowsill Artificial Agave 40 cm
120 to 140 cm Hallway, beside a chair, small room Tropical mini palm 120 cm
150 to 160 cm Behind the sofa, standard ceiling Artificial Ficus 150 cm, Japanese bamboo 160 cm
180 cm Empty corner, ceiling of 240 to 260 cm Green artificial Ficus 180 cm
200 cm High ceilings, reception area, mezzanine Artificial Strelitzia 200 cm real touch

You can see it all in small sizes, medium and large sizes.

Torn between two sizes?

Take the larger one. That sounds like a sales pitch, but it is the experience from our returns: a plant that is too small is lost against the wall and there is nothing to be done about it afterwards. A plant that is slightly on the large side you can move half a metre out of the corner, and it works after all.
