In short: choose a Ficus with small leaves (the plain green one or the Lyrata) if you want a light, airy tree, and a rubber plant if you prefer large, glossy leaves. In a normal room with a ceiling around 260 cm, 150 to 180 cm looks best.

The three types we carry

Ficus is a genus with hundreds of species. In artificial form there are three that really matter in an interior, and they differ mainly in leaf shape and character.

TypeLeafHeights we stockSuits
Green FicusSmall, matt, many branches120, 140, 150, 160, 180 cmA light corner where you want volume without it feeling heavy
Ficus Lyrata (fiddle leaf)Large, wavy, upright160 cmA statement next to the sofa or in a hallway
Rubber plant (Ficus elastica)Large, thick, glossy140, 160 cmClean interiors, works well against a plain wall

Which height to choose

The measurement people most often get too small. Measure the spot and use this rule of thumb.

  • 120 to 140 cm on a sideboard, in a window sill or beside an armchair.
  • 150 to 160 cm next to the sofa or at the end of a dining table. This is the size that fits most often.
  • 180 cm in a corner, in a hallway or in a room with a high ceiling. From this size the plant really fills the corner.

What to look for in an artificial ficus

  • Bendable branches. A good artificial ficus has a metal core in the branches, so you can unfold the crown after unpacking and set it at an angle. Without that it stays flat.
  • Colour variation in the leaves. A real ficus never has one even colour. Leaves with light and dark areas make the difference between real and fake.
  • A real trunk. We use wooden trunks, not painted plastic. Up close that is the first thing you notice.
  • A pot that fits. The plants come in a simple grow pot. Allow for a decorative pot roughly a third of the plant's width.

Ficus or rubber plant

Go for the plain green Ficus if the plant mainly has to fill space without drawing attention. Choose the Lyrata if the plant is the centrepiece of the room. Take the rubber plant if your interior is clean-lined and you like large planes of green. Our prices run between roughly 90 and 115 euros, depending on size.

Care

None. An artificial ficus needs no light and no water, so it can stand in a dark corner or a hallway. Dusting it every few months with a duster or a slightly damp cloth is enough. Do not leave it in full midday sun behind glass for days on end, as the leaves will fade over time.

Frequently asked questions

Which height of artificial ficus fits a normal living room?
With a ceiling around 260 cm, 150 to 180 cm looks best. Below 140 cm the plant disappears next to a sofa; above 180 cm you need a tall room or a hallway.
What is the difference between a Ficus Lyrata and a rubber plant?
The Lyrata has large wavy leaves with a matt texture and grows upright. The rubber plant (Ficus elastica) has thicker, glossy leaves and looks cleaner. The Lyrata is more of a centrepiece, the rubber plant suits a minimal interior.
Does an artificial ficus look real up close?
That depends on three things: colour variation in the leaves, bendable branches with a metal core, and a real wooden trunk. Ours have all three. Evenly green leaves and a painted plastic trunk are what give an artificial plant away.
Does an artificial ficus need light?
No. It can stand in a dark corner, a hallway or a bathroom without a window. Just avoid days on end in full midday sun behind glass, as the leaves will fade over time.
How do I clean an artificial ficus?
Use a duster, or a slightly damp cloth every few months. Not in the washing machine, and no cleaning products on the leaves.
