Blossom belongs to spring. In Japan, the flowering of the cherry blossom (sakura) is an annual highlight, celebrated with hanami: picnicking together under the blossom trees. The flowering period lasts only one to two weeks. After that the petals fall and it is over until next year.

Most blossom trees belong to the genus Prunus, the same family as the cherry, plum and almond (Rosaceae). In nature they flower only in early spring, when temperatures rise after a cold winter. That short flowering period is what makes blossom so special and so loved.
