Artificial olive trees, the new trend for 2025? Artificial olive trees are the trend of the moment. These beautiful artificial trees create a warm Mediterranean feel at home, on the balcony or in the garden. Real olive trees demand a lot of care, pruning and attention. They also grow slowly and are fussy about where they stand. It is no surprise, then, that artificial olive trees have taken off. What are their advantages over real ones? And what should you keep in mind if you want to buy one for indoors or outdoors?

Why choose an artificial olive tree?

  • Suitable for any spot: a real olive tree needs plenty of light. It is used to the dry, sunny climate around the Mediterranean. To grow a real olive tree in northern Europe you need a very sunny, warm position, ideally a spot that is too hot to sit in on a summer's day. With an artificial olive tree none of that is necessary.
  • Real olive trees are expensive to buy: and you also run the risk of losing them. A very small olive tree already costs over €40.00. Large or mature trees range from €250.00 up to €1,000. Quite an outlay.
  • Real olive trees have to be pruned: an artificial olive tree fits into a small space and does not grow. A real olive tree grows towards the light, so it has to be pruned to keep its shape. An artificial tree does not.
  • They can cause allergies: some people are allergic to real olive trees, much like hay fever. With an artificial olive tree that is not an issue. It causes no allergies and is safe for children and pets.

Want to follow the trend? Here is what to look out for when buying an artificial olive tree.

Where the olive tree will stand

Where do you want to put the artificial tree? Indoors, out of direct sunlight, or would you rather have it on the balcony in the sun? In that case it is important to choose a UV-resistant artificial olive tree. Artificial plants for outdoors have extra UV protection and are built to handle normal weather conditions.

Background and colour

Pay attention to the background where it will stand. Olive trees look best against neutral, light colours such as white, off-white, grey and beige. You can also place them against a more pronounced colour, but bear in mind that olive trees generally show at their best against a light background in earth tones.

Ceiling height versus the olive tree

Do you want a large artificial olive tree or a smaller one? Large artificial olive trees can be up to 2.00 metres tall. So take your ceiling height into account if you plan to put one indoors, and leave around 20 centimetres of clearance. Without it the ceiling can look even lower, which also affects how spacious the room feels.

Budget: artificial olive trees in every price range

You do not have to spend a lot to buy a good-quality artificial olive tree. Do be wary of cheap artificial plants: they are made from low-grade plastic and generally lack the details that give artificial trees their lifelike look. So if your budget is limited, choose a small tree of high quality instead. Those can last up to twelve years.

Which planter suits an artificial olive tree?

Which planter or pot you choose depends on your interior and the look you want. If you want to keep it calm, an attractive round planter or pot is a good choice. Go for terracotta if you want that lovely Mediterranean feel at home or on the terrace. And if you want to follow the trend, choose planters or pots in neutral colours such as white, brown or terracotta.

Do you want to put the tree outside in the garden, on the terrace or on the balcony? Then make sure the planter or pot is slightly wider than the trunk of the olive tree. Because these trees can be top-heavy, a sturdy base is essential to stop them blowing over. Weigh the pot down with stones or soil and make sure the water can drain away. Artificial olive trees often have a real wooden trunk, which can rot if it stays too wet.
